We can't talk about the making without talking about the makers. And in our case, that means a young team of people who love wine and decided to carry it further, leaving a little of themselves in the history of Dobrogean wine.

We are talking about the complete commitment, the drive and the energy of Zoe, Dumi, Maria and George Ghiuri, the owners of the winery; the talent and instinct of the oenologist Răzvan Macici, the best-known Romanian winemaker internationally; the youth of Vlăduț Bolovan; the experience of Valentin Ceafalău, who sits on the juries of the great international wine competitions, among them the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles; and Liviu Niță's eye for the market.

They are joined by Liviu Niță, Cosmin Codreanu, Claudiu Enache, Ilhan Vait, Alex Moldovan, Bogdan Țepeluș, Andrei Berbec, Doamna Mia and the women of the vineyard and the cellar, every member of the team a small but essential cog in this wonderful machine.

Head winemaker

From the 2019 vintage on, the wines of Crama Rasova carry the signature of Răzvan Macici, one of the most respected and decorated Romanian winemakers on the international stage.

With a formidable career behind him, he spent 14 years as Cellarmaster of the celebrated Nederburg winery and Head Winemaker of the Distell group, and today he is the winemaker of the South African winery Ormonde. In 2012 he was named “South African Winemaker of the Year”, and he was among the creators of the official wines of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

At Crama Rasova, his experience and his vision meet the Dobrogean terroir, giving wines that are elegant, expressive and balanced. Every wine sets out to capture the singular character of Dobrogea, through fruit, minerality, freshness and balance, completed by the winemaker's own signature.

“First of all, one has to understand that «good wine is made in the vineyard»! We have to get closer to the vineyard, to appreciate and to realise its quality potential to the full. For me that is the greatest challenge, and it can be done!”

For 25 years the Ghiuri family grew other people's brands, as one of the oldest drinks distributors in Romania. The idea of a winery of their own came in 2007; the financial crisis delayed it, but never put it out.

What carried it through in the end wasn't a business calculation, but the bank of the Danube next to the village of Rasova: the place that, Zoe says, gives her energy every single time. In 2016 the winery on Dealul Vifor opened its doors.

Since then, Zoe has run Rasova by one simple rule: passion can be tasted in the glass. An “expensive passion”, as she calls it, which has become one of the most respected projects in Romanian wine.

Today she puts the guest's experience at the centre of the winery: from the open circuit, where you follow the whole journey of the grape, to the AER by Rasova evenings, everything is built so that visitors leave with a story, not just a bottle.
